TAPS In Town!

Yes, the Ghost Hunters have made another visit to Rochester. Maybe since their leader Jason Hawes grew up around here, he has a fondness for the area. Or is our fair city just particularly haunted? This will be the 4’th time I can recall the TAPS crew investigating a local site. There was a private residence, the Valentown Museum, the Main Street Armory, and now the Rundel Memorial Library.

Rundel is a beautiful building that opened in 1936. It sits on the east side of the Genesee River directly over an old millrace. I went there often when I was in high-school and college to do research and, of course, just to feed my voracious appetite for books! I vividly remember the inlaid Zodiac pattern on the lobby floor and the feeling of light and space. I loved the sound of the water rushing through the millrace and looking out the window to see it spill into the river. I loved the golden wooden columns and walls and the smell of all those books. I used to hang out a lot in the History section learning about the Plantagenet kings, because I was writing my first novel (at age 16) set in their time. I always felt embraced when I was in that buiding.

Of course, there have long been stories of ghosts. One of my best friends is a librarian who used to work there. Once, when she was in the stacks, she saw a figure at the end of the aisle. She did a double-take because she knew she was alone. When she looked again, the figure was gone. She says she can’t swear that it wasn’t a trick of the light. But she can’t swear that it was either.

I’ve visited many of the same places TAPS has, but I’ve never encountered anything paranormal. I don’t think I’ve got a psychic bone in my body. But there is a special atmosphere in the Rundel Library. It has running water underneath it and limestone in its structure. Theories say that both can be conduits for paranormal phenomenona. I wonder what TAPS found? They surely discovered the Secret Room!

No one knows yet, because the contact agent is sworn to secrecy. All will be revealed when the episode airs on November 28 at 9:00 EST on the Syfy network. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, watch the show to see our wonderful library. I think Lily will soon be paying it a visit.

And speaking of Lily, Soul And Shadow, with its own ghost and psychic, will be free on November 22, 23, and 24’th. After that, both it and Fire And Shadow will be on sale, so be sure to check them out!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE!! I’m so grateful for all of you!
