Cleocatra is waiting for you!
On February 7, my novella Shell And Shadow will be released. This was a labor of love to honor my dear friend and all of the wonderful humanitarian work that she does, both for the PG Family Foundation and through the Betsy Hotel. I’ve written a story about the heroine of my novels, Lily Evans, on vacation with her boyfriend Kent. After all that Lily went through in Fire And Shadow, the woman deserved a break. And my readers wanted to see more of Kent, and less of his rival Stephen. Poor Stephen, he really is a great guy, if a bit overbearing. If you like him, don’t worry, he’ll be back in Storm And Shadow.
Shell And Shadow is a stand-alone read, a short romantic fantasy, perfect for Valentine’s Day. All profits are going to Zara’s Center, a home for AIDS-impacted children in Zimbabwe, supported by the Foundation and the Betsy. To celebrate its release, there is a contest with an incredible prize package. See what the Betsy has offered! And check back next week for the cover reveal and more contest details!
I have to admit, I have been a snob.
I love to write and I love to read, and those are the two things I’m usually doing. Television takes about five hours of my time each week. I’ve always been proud to say that I’ve never watched a single reality show, including any involving entertainment. I couldn’t understand the fervor of fans for Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, or any other series. The only program I’ve never missed over the course of thirty-seven years is Doctor Who. But we have a special relationship.
Now, I can no longer feel superior to anyone gushing over a show instead of a book. I can’t claim that I only watch historical documentaries. Because a wacky, wonderful, witty and whimsical miracle has hit the airwaves. I refer, of course, to Sleepy Hollow.
When I first heard of it, I thought it was one of the stupidest ideas ever. I love Washington Irving and was horrified that they’d do that to his story. I laughed at my brother when he sat down for the pilot episode. “I can’t believe you’re going to watch this garbage,” I said on my way into the kitchen. Coming back through, I glanced at the T.V. screen to mock it. Instead, my mouth fell open. There was a gorgeous man in 18th century clothing explaining to modern police that he fought with George Washington in the American Revolution. I was totally and instantly addicted. I’ll never be able to tease my sister about her obsession with Supernatural again.
Sleepy Hollow is impossible to sum up. It has the best-looking main character anywhere. (Sorry, Chris Hemsworth, I still love you, but the torch has been passed.) Tom Mison (who plays Ichabod Crane) was the perfect choice for this role. He oozes charm and he’s a talented actor. His face, and especially his eyes, are very expressive and can convey every nuance of emotion. He’s strong, intelligent and brave but the vulnerability of his strange new situation shows too. You can’t help but care for him.
He goes from suspect to consultant in a grisly murder investigation. His partner is Abbie Mills, played by Nicole Beharie, a young officer in the Sleepy Hollow police department. She’s beautiful and capable, sensitive and sarcastic by turns, and just as likeable as Mison. They play off of each other perfectly with a rare chemistry. Facebook fans (and I do NOT spend too much time reading and replying to the comments), are divided on whether or not there should be an Ichabbie romance. Besides that, the main bone of contention is whether or not Ichabod should change his clothes. The only things that everyone seems to agree on are:
1. Tom Mison is HOT.
2. Sleepy Hollow is the best show on T.V.
3. Tom Mison is REALLY HOT.
I must agree with the posters who believe that an Ichabod/Abbie romance would NOT be a good idea. After all, Ichabod has a wife (Katrina) who cast a spell to preserve him after he died on the battlefield. Now she’s stuck in Purgatory for her sins. How many wives are going through that for their husbands? And who did Ichabod in? One of the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Headless, of course. There are a lot of ingredients mixed into this Sleepy Stew. You have your good Gryffindor-y witches like Katrina, and an evil Slytherin-y coven. You have demons, lost colonists, Native American shamans, ghosts galore, masons and sin eaters. And that’s just the beginning.
But it’s the end of this post. Part two will be next week and is all about research and reality in writing. How important is it? Can it make or break a book or a show? My thoughts might surprise you.
Watch Sleepy Hollow on Fox Mondays at 9EST and check out their FB page at https://www.facebook.com/SleepyHollow. But be prepared to find yourself watching each episode at least twice and counting the days (and hours) until the next one!
I’m just curious-who do you think Ichabod should be with, Abbie or Katrina?
Happy Halloween, everyone!

Welcome October, my favorite month of the year! It’s so beautiful that I keep looking out of the window instead of writing. But who can blame me?
There’s a lot going on this particular October—starting today with Halloweenpalooza! The 31 Days of Halloween are happening at https://www.facebook.com/events/164385847097718/permalink/167233670146269/
The amazing thriller author Wendy Potocki has created this event and all are cordially invited to join! There are prizes galore (including books from me) and a ghost-story competition with the winner grabbing a bag full of goodies! There are also guest blogs by some great authors, and interviews of them as well. I humbly reveal that mine is one of them. Please come by, no costume necessary!
My fellow Imajin author Jesse Giles Christiansen is still recruiting for his Skeleton Army. He’s celebrating the success of his novel Pelican Bay. Just click on the title to be taken to the Facebook Page.
FIRE AND SHADOW is going on a Bewitching Blog Tour October 21-25. I’ll have more details when I know the exact stops.
Now let me leave you with a poem from one of my favorite poets: Robert Frost. Thank you!
Begin the hours of this day slow.
